Struisenburg, Kralingen is certainly not just for students! Of course, you are close to the university so you see them more often but this gives the neighbourhood a young and vibrant feel. It’s not only the student spots that make Struisenburg so attractive, it’s a place for people who love all the good things in life: good food, fine wines, lush gardens and a boat trip on the water.
Wijn aan de Kade
This wine bar receives a lot of attention and it’s not only because of the wine. The interior is also something for the connoisseur! The exterior does not suggest that an ultra-sleek interior is hiding behind the facade, where cutting-edge technologies are used. The walls are covered with 2100 laser-cut wooden panels that are reminiscent of wine boxes. The cellar is a Walhalla for wine lovers with the best bottles from Burgundy and Bordeaux and to top it all off, there’s a kitchen for wine and food tastings.
The Kitchen
The Student Hotel on the Willem Ruyslaan is a hit. In this hotel-meets-student-house the design interior and the dynamics are worth a visit. You don’t have to book a room for that, you can also have a bite to eat in restaurant The Kitchen. Because, as the hotel itself says, “What self-respecting hotel does not have an inspiring place to dine?” This one certainly does! They serve food at any time of the day and the dishes are reasonably priced because it is, of course, a Student Hotel.
Trompenburg
Trompenburg is a botanical garden on the Honingerdijk. This is not just a garden, we are talking about serious collections of trees, shrubs, plants, tubers and a desert greenhouse. Everything for the plant lover, and for people who enjoy peace and quiet and nature, in the middle of the city. In addition to walks such as the ‘Rhododendron Walk’, lectures, exhibitions and workshops are organised, depending on the season. After the Sunday afternoon walk, that cake in the Tea House is well deserved!
Oostzeedijk
Are you going out to drink or dine? Head for the Oostzeedijk, a street with many options! A beer tasting at the brown beer-café Locus Publicus – with its large bar and warm fireplace – is always a success, with 200+ specialty beers and 15 (varying) beers on tap to choose from. For tapas go to the cosy Heaven on Earth, for a good meal (chicken) at a friendly price, to Van ‘t Spit. In Thai restaurant De Kleine Ondeugd you will be surprised by a varying three-course menu. Stopping off for lunch? Visit the Bakkerswinkel cafe around the corner on the Oostplein.
Kaat Mossel
For mussels, oysters, lobster and all that’s delicious from the sea, try Kaat Mossel on the Admiraliteitskade. The restaurant is named after Catharina Mulder, a Rotterdam fish-woman who was known around 1785 for her big mouth (one of the reasons that she was arrested). The historical character is evident everywhere inside the restaurant. Tip: when the weather is nice, book the restaurant’s boat and enjoy Kaat Mossel snacks and drinks on the water of the Maas and the old harbours.
