Entertainment along the Maas: water neighbourhood De Esch

If you’re looking for a day of fun along the Maas, then you've come to the right place

The Esch is known for its water-rich history. Not surprisingly, you can still experience plenty on and around the water today. If you’re looking for a day of fun along the Maas, then you’ve come to the right place.

Nautilus Rowing Club

As a member of the Nautilus rowing club you can take the boats out on the Rotte or Nieuwe Maas rivers. Train for competitions, marathon trips or stay fit in a playful way. The active members voluntarily provide instructions, bar services, maintenance of boats and the organisation of competitions and tours. ‘Being a member of Nautilus is more than just rowing’, is the motto.

Restaurant De Watertoren

The water tower in the Esch is the oldest existing water tower in the Netherlands. The tower, built in 1871, was renovated in 1986 and has been used as a work space ever since. With a height of 48 metres and 7 water reservoirs, this is a true work of art. You can also eat here at restaurant De Watertoren. This gem is a national monument.

De Esch beach

Take your picnic basket and enjoy the Maas on the beach at the Nesserdijk. In summer you can find young and old together at this spot that is popular among families. Relax on a chair with your feet in the sand. During other seasons it’s a good place for a walk.

Ice skating!

The ice skating rink on hockey terrain Leonidas is a wonderful place for skating enthusiasts in the winter. Not only can you roam over the ice to your heart’s content, you can also join us at the (silent) disco or for a game of curling with your friends (that ‘sport with the broom’). Plenty to do!

De Esch Nature Reserve

De Esch Nature Reserve is a welcome change from urban areas on the outskirts of the city. Here nature has been able to go its own way undisturbed. More than 200 species of plants are already growing on the deposited port silt and this place is also a favourite with dozens of different species of birds. Take a 3 km walk through the marshy area.
